RAE

April 27th, 2006 (11:12 pm)
current music: Martin Carthy: 'Hard Cheese of Old England'

I've delayed it too long, but I'm finally writing - well, cut and pasting at the moment - my submission for the faculty's draft for the detested RAE. The coffee is being drunk, believe me...

The bane of University departments... the "Research Assessment Exercise", measuring quality-of-research-produced. (Teaching is dealt with separately.)

Good luck, Sir Knight! I understand (second-hand) that rather like OFSTED in schools, it mainly involves generating paperwork that will then be filed and forgotten.

I had intended to spell out 'Research Assessment Exercise', but it was getting late and didn't notice that I hadn't done so in the final posting. Thanks, kargicq!

There's a possibly interesting article in this week's Oxford Magazine - sadly not available online, as far as I'm aware - about the growth of productivity-related assessment and funding in British universities, comparing them to the Dutch experience

Oh good, someone else has admitted to not knowing what a RAE is.

It would be better were one not to know...

Thank you! It's still not finished, as sleep got the better of me, which is probably a good thing.
