Returned...

July 18th, 2006 (01:19 am)

...I'm back in Woodstock on what might be the hottest day of the year. My parents are staying tonight; the windows are open and the fans and dehumidifier are on. It's very uncomfortable and I've already ended up drenching myself as a result of trying to drink too much water at once. This was not actually a bad thing given the heat.

I did have an enjoyable time away, and must write up the hotel in Kirkcudbrightshire (my sister's boyfriend thought it was like Fawlty Towers from her description) and the family party on Saturday, if only to record the activities of my goddaughter. Sample:

Elderly in-law: "What have you enjoyed most about this afternoon?"
Goddaughter: "Kicking parrot_knight!"

See? Women regard you as a large, solid reassuring object.

I think they see me as a person rather than an object, I'm glad to say. At least, I hope they do.

I'm sure all self-respecting small children see you as the Annapurna.

The heat is indeed getting silly. Although I think we're going to have to get used to it...

I'm actually coping with it better than I did in 2003 - although granted it isn't (yet!) as hot as it was then. At home, we are being careful to leave (uppoer-floor) windows and skylights open, and blinds / curtains closed, a lot; and I'm taking this a bit easier (trans being lazy), and making even more effort to drink water.

My work was 32ºC from 11-4 today even with a fan it was stifling!

No air-conditioned office for me - just the windows wide open.

emperor

Our workroom thermometer stops at 26ºC! Walking home at 2pm, the pavement was so hot it was hurting my feet through the soles of my shoes. They're wimpy-soled shoes, but still!!! This is real central Illinois weather.

I think it's been 36C or so here today. My water consumption has been, necessarily, up. There was a mishap last night when I ended up drenching my legs, but as sleeping in a cold bath might conceivably have been at least in reach of being a good idea, it wasn't too much of a problem.

It was 40 degrees in my office today. The air conditioning is broken. The plus side of which is that the head of the department said we can't put up with that, and to work at home tomorrow.

The interacting with the children, actually - the kicking came after I caught my goddaughter, aged three, who had 'tagged' me and asked me to chase her around the back garden. On being caught she would announce that she had actually caught me, but she hadn't expected to be lifted up, which led her to blow raspberries into my ear and kick happily. I was later set up when she asked me to put a cushion at the bottom of the slide and then asked me to kneel there, with the intention that she could land and start kicking my knees happily.

She also spent an hour entertaining my sister in her bedroom with a disquisition on the colour of the walls, how wonderful her Daddy was for painting the walls just like she wanted them, on dolls, and how her dog died at Christmas and is in heaven.

so so

Notably the average for this week of July is meant to be 21-23 (according to the BBC). I nerly posted this under Pellegrina's last but thought not everyone would note it.
