Which Doctor Who are you?
Your Result: You are the First Doctor!

You are a grumpy old scatterbrain, but you always know exactly what to do in a crisis.

You're also very protective of those that you care about, and would do anything to keep them from harm.

You are the Third Doctor!
You are the Sixth Doctor!
You are the Fifth Doctor!
You are the Fourth Doctor!
You are the Seventh Doctor!
You are the Eighth Doctor!
You are the Second Doctor!

I got the Third Doctor, which rather pleased me because I always liked Jon Pertwee.

Do you know Paul Darrow always wanted to be the Doctor? I think they should have given him the chance. :-)

I didn't know that Paul Darrow wanted to play the Doctor. He was always scathing about the programme in interviews and in his column for Blake's 7 Monthly, IIRC, and his performance as Tekker in the Doctor Who story 'Timelash' suggested that he had no respect for the series, though to be fair that feeling seems to have been shared by many on that production.

The thing with Paul, and this may surprise you, is that he's not a science fiction fan. Paul is interested in Raymond Chandler and his ilk, and if you ever read any fiction he's written (not recommended except for curiosity value, since his writing ability is nowhere even close to his acting talent) you will see this influence. He is a versatile actor who has played a lot of very different roles, but the reason he made Avon into such a memorable and indeed iconic figure was that he was given a lot of leeway with the part, so Avon ended up becoming exactly the sort of noir anti-hero that Paul had always particularly wanted to play. If you read the scripts of the first few episodes, you'll see that there was plenty of scope to play him differently, but Paul picked up on the darker elements straight away and Terry Nation liked it, so he ended up writing the part more to suit the actor's interpretation. Ironic, really, since Paul in real life is an avuncular and very funny old gentleman with a taste for garden gnomes and fluffy slippers. :-)

I don't recall him being scathing about Dr Who in interviews apart from the specific episode in which he played Tekker, which I know he thought was incredibly badly scripted and therefore he couldn't take it seriously. It's very possible, however, that he misunderstood it because he doesn't really get SF in general, and therefore ended up sounding unintentionally disparaging because he hadn't got a clue what he was talking about.

On a slightly related note, Tom Baker (at the time when he was playing the Doctor) once threw a BBC breakfast at Paul without warning. I have no idea why, and I am fairly sure that neither does Paul. Happily, he missed. :-)

It doesn't surprise me that he's not a great science-fiction fan. I know that he is a great fan of certain periods of film-making and has a wide knowledge of military history, particularly the Napoleonic Wars, and the duke of Wellington in particular, having enthused to me in person about him once.

Yes, indeed. He's very knowledgeable in those areas.

It occurs to me to wonder which Doctor he'd be if he took this quiz. :-)

Which Doctor Who are you?

You're as bumbling as you are lethal. People often don't take you seriously, but they should.

You're also technically minded, and love inventing things.

You are the Eighth Doctor!
You are the Third Doctor!
You are the Fourth Doctor!
You are the Fifth Doctor!
You are the First Doctor!

I was almost the eighth Doctor!

Did you give priority to all the kissing questions?

I'm not sure about this meme. Clearly you get to be the eighth Doctor if you prioritise kissing. But the tenth Doctor has done more snogging than the 8th, hasn't he?

Depends on your interpretation of 'The Girl in the Fireplace'... well, there's no question about it really.

I think the tenth was not included in the quiz.

(I was 7th)

I got the eighth doctor, too, but I didn't answer yes to any of the kissing questions. Since the only Doctor Who I've seen have been the two new series, I have to admit that I don't even know which one the eighth doctor is, so I've no idea if this is a good answer or a bad one. I imagine it's a rather different experience doing this quiz when you don't know the doctors, so don't know which result specific answers are pushing you towards.

I was the seventh doctor. Fair enough, except that one of their characteristics of the 7th Doc was "you are always happy". Eh?

Whoever wrote this quiz has not been paying close attention; and would be welcome to enrol for a degree course at the University of Woodstock, Parrot Tower Campus, if they have - oh, £20,000 to spare. Accommodation not included.

All the first eight Doctors in order, in an attractive descending curve of likingness! I must have been fated from the start not to like New Who ;-)

If the curve continued it would have gone into negative which sometimes seems to be a fair assessment of your take on the new series, yes...
