Pratchett meme

My thoughts on Night Watch, and why I'm not a Pratchett-admirer, in the mammoth books post (which I'd rather be writing this weekend instead of an interview presentation). In the mean(meme?)time, this:

You scored as Carrot Ironfounderson. You are Captain Carrot Ironfounderson of the City Watch in the greatest city on the Disc – Ankh-Morprok! A truly good natured, honest guy, who knows everyone, and is liked by all. Technically a dwarf, but only by adoption. You’d rather not be reminded that you are the true heir to the throne, but that does explain why people naturally follow your orders…

Well, before I clicked, I thought, "Parrot Knight is surely Carrot Ironfoundersson" :-)

I don't remember him from Night Watch, but I probably wasn't paying attention.

Aw! I didn't engage brain before clicking on post, but you are absolutely Carrot. Actually, Carrot is in most of the Vimes books, Night Watch being an exception. He's earnest. And moral. Very very earnest. Very very moral. And very large. And occasionally misses the point of what other people, in their bizarre diversity, are driving at. And inspires people to trust him. "Guards Guards" would be your introduction to Carrot.

He seems a bit dimmer than I think I am, actually, but part of the point of these things is giving in to self-caricature.

Oh, but Carrot isn't dim at all. People may think he is, but that is their mistake.

I think Pratchett is way over-rated. He loves his jokes more than telling a story.

I agree he's over rated - but, funnily enough, it's for the opposite reason. If he stuck to weaving a story around his jokes, as he did in the late eighties/early nineties, he'd be an excellent comic author. Unfortunately, he doesn't really convince me as a writer of serious fiction (not that he should - just that he doesn't) - Night Watch kind of exemplifies this for me. But then a lot of people seem to really like it, so what do I know?
