The River Glyme this morning

January 11th, 2007 (10:22 am)

The meadows north of the Glyme and visible from my window have been filling up with water for the last few weeks, and the river next to them has been rising too. Today, the two have joined. On the picture, the light green strip of grass running into the top of the garage roof is where the far bank of the Glyme normally is, and I can usually only see a little running water from my window, rather than today's broad stream.

Wow, that's rather high. Are you going to be swimming soon?

I doubt that it will reach the flats, thanks to drainage; and I doubt that I will ever swim...

I'm still puzzling over which bit you mean, the grass I can see (which leads into the garage) is plainly the grass by the garages. Do you mean that just beyond the grass where you can see a light green stripe in the water (running between the forked tree and the rest behind the garage) that this is the Glyme in normal conditions?

I'm talking about the brightish green stripe on the same horizontal as the garage roofs. That's the usual north bank of the Glyme. The Glyme proper can be glimpsed as a grey smudge beneath it, mainly obscured by the south bank and grasses.

Well it all looks like a broad stretch of water with several distinct lines of deeper water (either ditches, paths through the undergrowth or stream beds).

Ah, *looks closer still* if I look at the diagonal of the roof, at the bottom end it is just touching an area of water and some long brown grassy stuff. Is that the edge of your grey smudge, Glyme? Certainly the apex of the roof touches the far edge of the green stripe that I was originally referring to and the next tree to the right of the forked one.
