Whoniversal Appeal

June 20th, 2008 (02:43 pm)

I was told yesterday by thanatos_kalos that my proposed paper for Whoniversal Appeal in Cardiff this November has been accepted. Registration hasn't yet opened, but the plan is to have a draft schedule online by the end of the month. I'll be talking about Doctor Who fandom's attitude to the programme's depiction of human history, and its relation to what we know of the intentions of the relevant production teams.

Well done for getting accepted, and I hope it goes well.

The dates mean that I cant't invite a speaker for taruithorn on footnotetoplato's preferred date - there are advantages to going for two weeks before (the week before will be one day before the bonfire, and I think people will be distracted), and also for the week after. I shall consider.

Oo, yay you. Sounds interesting and just a little bit controversial.

McGann

It's going to be part of a panel on history and classics; the conference organiser is herself doing a doctorate on, I think, Britain in late antiquity. Which reminds me that I need to contact her again...

Tom

Thank you - I am already being tempted towards ambition, and may attempt a presentation with video and sound, which I've not done before.

Sylvester

Thank you! :) I find that I have more ideas for, and am more enthusiastic about, Doctor Who conferences than those about eighteenth-century history...

I feel the same way about punk rock and Star Trek...

There must be an opportunity for crosscurrenting your academic musicological interest and punk, I would have thought...

Yes, definitely, but my adviser is also definitely not interested!

It is, though it's signing up for another potential time-sink....

I am, and am looking forward to the event, which looks as if it's taking Harry Potter events like Sectus as an inspiration. I have the impression that Harry Potter fandom has helped re-energise Doctor Who fandom - more cross-currents to examine.
