Doctor Who 4[XXX].12: The Stolen Earth

June 28th, 2008 (06:52 pm)

I'm not reviewing this episode as such for LJ, because I've promised to write a review of the two-part finale for a fanzine. Instead, I thought I'd attempt a liveblog - but don't expect long or even coherent sentences...

"Take cover! The Daleks are back, in Doctor Who!" says the announcer over the closing credits of After You've Gone...

"The biggest adventure yet.."

It's a Saturday. "I like Saturdays..."

Shivering milk bottles! Roof tiles!
Bubbling hand in jar... but Rose is coming back. Ism't that good?

Outside -Earth has gone, milk bottles and all. TARDIS not planet-napped?

Martha being Doctorish among all the Americans.

Meanswhile - welcom Gwen and Ianto!

"A little bit bigger than Soputh Wales"

Luke knows abot cross-diomensional spatial transfernece. Mr Smith actuallly plays his theme as he launches...

Cribbins is brilliant. "Go inside Sylvia, they always want the women!"

Milkman meet Rose - and a lot of planets.

CREDITS.

Rapid fire names!

Amnd for the first time we get semi-regulars and Torchwoodites after the credits...

Richard Dawkins - obviously an astronomer in Who universe.

Like the End of the World party atmosphere (have momentary expectations of title-checking.)
Rose still has time to take on looters at the apocalypse.

Medical Director on Project Indigo... "I met a soldier in a bar" "Strictly rpofessional" (After all, this is pre-watershed).

Exterminate! Jack and Sarah emotional and helpless. Rose also getting teary.

'Megabyte Sale Now On.' Must be a modem - all tge Valeyard's doing!

Like the variety of Dalek voices Nick is managing this time. Nice saucers.

Supreme Dalek - good Dalek Invasion of Earth homage.

Shadow Proclamation - posh name for police. (Housed in an annexe to Torchwood?)
Dr speaks Judoon.

Shadow Proclamation - striking contacts.

Donna brilliant again - time factor.

The Mill have been busy this week...

DIoE invoked again! "Anything Terry can do, Russell can do better..."

Martha doing bandaging... ordered away to be military...

"Annihilate UNIT!" Martha has Torchwoody leanings. Osterhagen key?
Off we teleport...

Great Davros dialogue.

'The Abomination' - Aaronovitch homage. "Threefold man..."

Donna's heartbeat - "something new" - something on her back still. Loss that is yet to come? Buildup here...

That ring's more prominent now.

Bees! From Melissa Majoria (now he's channelling Pip and Jane)

Shadow Prcos are new Time Lords down to decor and attempts to order the Doctor around.

'Attack Formation 7' - sense of tactics, strategy, culture.

Rose goes Abslom Daak!

So Doctor closed Medusa Cascade as a 'kid' - of 90.

UN surrender.

Harriet! Subwave network...

Harriet the splitscreen queen... Jack flirts with Sarah - too many guns.
Rose cut off...

Subwave - Mr Copper - but who is watching her? Why forget about the key?
Jealous Rose. Send phone number through the Rift... Appropriate for a police box...

Cheesy action music.

So Rift is fixed in Cardiff...

Like the stethoscope...

Enjoys keeping Davros in shadows.

TARDIS on fire... transfer to Torchwood.

Goodbye Harriet?
1960s-homage graphics.

Gwen's Doctorlust. Rose cut off. :(
Outerspace Facebook.

Doctor as 'Dark Lord', which he would be...

'Gates of Elysium' - continuing a theme.

One ordinary Dalek - lovely parallel with Russell's 'ordinary human' stuff.

Exterminate Torchwood!

Hang on - Jack's wrist control gets going easily - deserts Gwen and Ianto with a smile...

Rose has a 'Control'...

The first look - Aah! Donna's smile is great...

Exterminate - Doctor down! Rose smiles.... Jack with them... Into the Tardis... Gwen and Ianto - Owen and Tosh invoked -

Step back - you know what happens next - looks at hand...

Daleks do not accept apologies!

Daleks in the Hub!

Gwen#s scram...

And we regenerate out of the episode with no flash forward!

Good arrangement of everything and the kitchen sink.... but the build-up somehow overtook the content of the episode itself.... looking forward to how next week is pulled off...

...and I can't get through to the Doctor Who Forum. What a surprise...

Some great emoting though from the cast. Lots of effort into Donna in particular from Catherine Tate.

We still don't know about the Darkness, or why Donna's back is still in play (though the beetle might still be in time flux) or indeed very much. Julian Bleach is a much more restrained Davros than Terry Molloy.

I spotted "Callufrax Minor" in the list of planets registered as missing by the Shadow Proclamation, and liked the presumed joke that some planets get stolen twice... but why is it 'Minor'? Indeed, why is it there anyway? Presumably The Pirate Planet hasn't happened yet...

Fair enough - this seems to be becoming a common sight on LJ. If you are able to link to the full-length review at a later date, inquiring minds and all that...

I thought that the character said "was" on her back, not "is"? Wasn't her facial expression touching when she said "tell her yourself" and as the Doctor ran?

Catherine Tate is the queen of facial expressions, certainly - the absence of any sign of jealousy was welcome. Very much the big sister again.

roman food

I don't say I was disappointed with this, exactly, but I felt there was a certain absence of logic. Maybe my reactions are just too slow - it was certainly Sound and Fury, very fast. Some good bits, though.

Definitely Sound and Fury, and signifying a large set-up for next week's 65-minute extravaganza.

Doctor Who

I only watched this last night (I've been having a 'season eighteen plus Castrovalva' marathon), so I've only just read this.

I think Callufrax Minor is supposed to be a twin planet to Callufrax from The Pirate Planet, as in Androzani Major and Androzani Minor. If it was supposed to be the one from the earlier story surely the Doctor would have wondered if the Guardians were involved.
