Contractual dispute

August 27th, 2008 (03:00 pm)

“We are informed, that the Lord Mohun being lately at Callais, happened to quarrel with a Capt about some horses he would had to be carryed to Dunkerke; insomuch there they fought and the Lord Mohun was ran through the body."

Bod MS Carte 228 fo 270, Newsletter, 19 January 1698/99

[The fourth Baron Mohun was a notorious rogue who ended up being killed in a duel with the fourth duke of Hamilton in 1712. I've also come across him stealing coaches and being involved in street fights outside taverns.]

In the immortal words of the Dowager Duchess of Denver on the contrast between the Elizabethan period and the mid twentieth, I sometimes wonder if our young people get enough out of life these days!

Well Mohun (a check of ODNB shows) was tried for the murder of an actor, William Mountfort, in 1693. He was acquitted by vote of his peers in the House of Lords, though plainly guilty. He could be described as a sort of aristocratic hoodie, and wasn't very huggable.

It's not precisely relevant, but I couldn't help thinking of parrot_knight when I read this story!

I saw this - but what does the parrot do when it cries 'Exterminate!'?

I'll leave the answer to those with a more creative sense of humour... ;)
