Oxonmoot 2008

September 28th, 2008 (05:35 pm)

Well, that was really rather good. Spreading the event out over two days worked, particularly in that it left space between papers, with the down side, perhaps, that I felt slightly less pressured to be in Oxford for the 9am start than I normally do, leading me to miss a paper I'd have liked to be at. Eight miles can be a long way, as I seem to have been moaning more and more lately.

I still didn't say hello to as many people as I'd wished in quite the way I'd wished; but I was glad of staying late well beyond Park and Ride service closing times and thereby taking advantage of the generous hospitality of those actually staying in Christ Church. I sit here in my Oxonmoot 2008 T-shirt, however, and with two volumes of the 2005 conference proceedings to my left and already dipped into. One can't fault someone whose response to discovering that no Gothic poetry survives was to write a poem in Gothic.

Other highlights of the weekend: discovering Slovak cuisine at Moya on St Clements'; listening to those with a better memory of the books argue over how the Narnia film series might continue; being recognised, so her mother said, by na_quis; hearing of Tolkien's debt to now neglected mediaeval romances of Troy and Alexander; and, by my accident and someone else's design, becoming a werewolf in the tradition of Beren.

Christ Church was perhaps a little big for the event, splendid though it is, and it's a pity that a larger lecture room wasn't available as the stewards had to turn away several people from talks. Nonetheless the position of hospitality en route to the dealers' room helped it become busier than it has been in earlier times at other colleges, which improved the atmosphere, though the room's layout led to circulation problems at peak times when there were runs on the hot water.

It was great to see you! I am sorry to have missed the talk on the romances - that's something I'd really have liked to hear about. And I am very much looking forward to reading the Proceedings.

I'm not sure when I'll get round to reading all the chapters, but as you will recognise from the content of the post, I have consulted yours. It was good to see you too!
