On North End Road the nightbus sings to the ghosts of market gardens and country mansions, of painters and financiers, of the hopeful City workers of a century and more ago seeking clean air and grander homes, and the builders who named the streets so as to make a little Ireland - Baronscourt was a house in Co. Tyrone before Barons Court was a district between Hammersmith and Earl's Court. Downstairs a couple talk passionately in a language I do not know, but which London knows, because London has heard every element of every thought from every person from every corner of the world who has passed through it, or believes that it has, and it speaks to itself through the night in tongues while aircraft groan their transience overhead.

Incidentally, we're currently living on Fulham Palace Road, a short bus ride or 20 minute walk from North End Road if you want to come visit sometime.

Thank you! I'm mainly in London on weeknights (and might see about commuting back to Woodstock on some nights to give my sister a break) but I would like to come over at some point.

Alice Street

Yes. And I'm so excited and proud to live here, even though it's been my home for almost a decade now.

I think I'd take a while to reorientate myself if I did work in London full-time. The first place I think of moving to is Headington, which shows how I still think in Oxford terms...

That's the fascinating things about cities - all the layers. Your post reminds me of HV Morton's books on London.

It will not surprise you that Morton is another writer whose work I haven't read...
