Jimmy Forsyth, 1913-2009

July 17th, 2009 (03:30 pm)

His name hadn't registered in my memory before his death this week, but I've lived with his photography of Newcastle, one way or another, all my life. Read the obituary in the print version of today's Guardian, if you can, as some of his pictures are reproduced alongside it; otherwise the obituary is here, and the Newcastle Evening Chronicle's report on his death is here.

big city

I can't say I'd heard of him at all before now, but I've almost certainly seen some of his photographs somewhere or other - he sounds like an important historian even if he didn't know it.

I think he knew of the importance of his work in later life, even if the project began as a very personal one, keeping himself occupied during unemployment. So much of that area of Newcastle has been swept away; there has recently been a second round of demolition, with much of Scotswood itself demolished and grassed over.
