Goodbye old friend

November 3rd, 2009 (08:43 pm)

A kettle which I believe had accompanied me from Oxford to Newcastle to London and back to Oxford and various destinations around it for over twelve years was finally retired today, after it was shown to be leaking water at its base. This is probably a good lifespan for a plastic kettle. Its water gauge was long inaccurate, clogged with limescale, but it was well-travelled and had become a link with past epochs of my existence. It is now in a plastic bag awaiting its fate.

You know what might be a good replacement? A Zojirushi or a Tiger. They're a little expensive and probably not very common in non-Asian homes, but they're quite nice and long lasting. We have one at home. Keeps water hot at certain temperatures, perfect for tea, ramen, etc. http://www.zojirushi.com/ourproducts/elepots/electricpots.html

I've had my Aroma [TM] for about ten years, and it seems to work quite well. Of course, it was packed away in an attic for about five of them...

I really like that style of hot water pots. Did you know Costco carries Tiger now at some locations? :)

Nice icon, btw. Ever hear that song by Corb Lund? "Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer"

I'm fairly sure the Costco in Kahului carries Tiger.

I haven't heard that song, but the title makes me think of the hairstyle by brother had in 1971. I took the photo on the Isle of Lewis back in '06. No highland coos on Maui, though we definitely have cowboys.

I think it'd be too hot for highlands on the islands. Nice picture. :)

I've not come across Aroma in the UK either... I ended up going for a basic jug kettle from the store's own brand range, and redeeming loyalty card points against it.

I'd never come across one of these, and have already bought the replacement kettle. Zojirushi's Europe site doesn't seem to have the models you point out.

Ah, too bad. Well, I hope your new kettle brings you years of good service. :)
