Sir Peter was quoted in the local Wellington paper as saying 'I didn't think anything could top the 2004 Oscars, but this is better'.

Good for him. The New Zealand honours haven't been picked up yet over here; they are now independent from the xBE structure (some Commonwealth countries, like Belize, still publish as an annexe to the British list) and I think the British media have forgotten that New Zealand still has knights.

Well, the British media were right until quite recently. The titles of Knight and Dame were abolished by the previous Labour government in 2000, in favour of an indigenous system (the New Zealand Order of Merit).

The new National government has just reinstated the old system, claiming that Knight and Dame are internationally recognisable titles. I imagine that the subtext was 'ooh err, it's all just PC gone mad isn't it?!', but that might just be my politics showing ;-)

I knew about the New Zealand Order of Merit coming in, but I'd not realised that knights and dames are a recent addition to it.

RTD got his OBE a few years back, and on his current trajectory I'd expect David T to receive something at some stage.

I suppose they haven't knighted Charles yet, have they? They really ought, given that Emma Kirkby is a Dame!

I think you are going to have to organise the recommendation!

Well, it's not as if he'll ever put himself forward. He still looks astonished every time I tell him how well he sang, bless him. :-)
