It was forty years ago today....

January 3rd, 2010 (05:31 pm)

On 3 January 1970, Jon Pertwee made his first appearance as the title character of Doctor Who in Spearhead from Space episode one. This seems an anniversary worth acknowledging with an old Radio Times cover.

Pertwee

My pleasure! Pertwee was the first Doctor I remember, and it was seeing the opening few minutes of the emergency repeat of The Sea Devils on 27 May 1974 (I looked that up) and thus exposing me to Jo Grant (though not in the Girl Illustrated sense) and the red diamond howlaround title sequence when I was used to Sarah Jane Smith and the slit-scan tunnel, which laid the seeds of my fanhood.

Girl Illustrated ... Sarah Jane ...

*shakes head* Oh, sorry, you distracted me there ... ;-)

Hee! I have always had a soft spot for the Third Doctor.

Pertwee

He was very unfashionable for a while, but his reputation has been helped by the DVDs somehow, and the respect always shown to Messrs Letts and Dicks.

Indeed. It's a different world, now.

I haven't given up hope of Rowan Atkinson doing it for reals...

I'm not sure about Atkinson as the Doctor long-term, though his Curse of Fatal Death Doctor was very good.
