Elisabeth Sladen 1946-2011

April 19th, 2011 (08:29 pm)

I don't know what to say, really. My sister remarks that her first memory is of Sarah watching as Eldrad's hand regenerates and reanimates at the end of part one of The Hand of Fear. Elisabeth Sladen's Sarah Jane Smith was the perfect Doctor Who assistant and a touchstone of reliability and dedication in the face of otherworldly adversity for more than one generation. This is a great shock; to say she will be widely missed is an understatement. Her husband Brian Miller and daughter Sadie will be in everyone's thoughts.

Sarah Jane Smith #1

Thank you for letting us know. We happen to be watching Dr Who at this very moment, although not with Sarah Jane; the final episode of The Key To Time.

I think I might watch her very first story.

That would be appropriate.

My feelings are very similar.

SarahJaneSmith

This is different to Nick Courtney. In his way he was a very public man and it was fairly widely known in fandom that he had been seriously ill for some time. Lis Sladen was nineteen years younger, and very active. Some of last year's SJA plotlines seem very self-aware with hindsight.

Desperately sad news. My Sarah Jane.

There was only one Elisabeth Sladen; she approached the role of Sarah Jane with absolute professionalism.

If true - and I suspect it is - this is desperately sad.

Too many places are reporting that they have been told the news by an authoritative source for this to be some kind of sick hoax, as of course I first hoped.

What sad news. As Sarah Jane she bought so much pleasure to so many. 63 is too young. :(

Me

My Mum mentioned this over Yom Tov lunch. I was quite shocked. The first two series of The Sarah Jane Adventures came at a time when I had almost given up on the BBC Wales programmes and gave me new hope. This is sad news.

It's very sad. I'm taken aback at how unhappy I am, and I know I'm not alone. I never met Elisabeth Sladen (and was too in awe to speak to her when we were alone in a corridor together seventeen years ago) but have known Sarah Jane Smith since before I went to school. I look forward to the time when CBBC are ready to show the last few episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

I'm also surprised how unhappy I am. I never met her either and to be honest Sarah was never one of my favourite companions, but my thoughts today keep drifting back to her and especially to her effortless lead role in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
