Ran the Gauntless

January 9th, 2012 (11:54 pm)

I was an advocate of the theory that the initial replacement for Katy Manning on her departure from the role of Jo Grant in Doctor Who was Fiona Gaunt. I am happy to be intrigued by the revelation that the actress concerned was someone else entirely. When (for reasons explained on the other side of the link) this actress was doomed to depart before production on The Time Warrior had got very far, she was of course replaced by the late and much-missed Elisabeth Sladen; and my childhood and all that followed would have been very different.

I've just watched the (pretty mediocre) Wilde Alliance episode Express to Rome to see what she's like -- alas she plays Helga, the autograph hunter, and has about three lines of dialogue!

This looks rather impressive though.

It's very good indeed. Somewhere, in some alternative possibility, season 11 is remembered as the War of the Bouffants... though one wonders how late the idea of the new female companion being a UNIT lieutenant was dropped.

It would explain why the Brigadier and Benton know her as the Doctor's assistant in Invasion of the Dinosaurs. The Brig should be thinking of her as Lavinia Smith and Benton hasn't met her on-screen at all.

It also explains the ambiguity of some of the dialogue in The Time Warrior, which Tat Wood notes, where Sarah exclaims "Why wasn't I informed?" as if she had a previous connection to UNIT.

Two lost episodes and now this! Who would have thought that old Who would be so exciting again (in news terms, not in terms of the stories themselves, which never stopped being exciting)?

I know! The next issue of Nothing at the End of the Lane has more information, thanks to April Walker herself.
