current music: Eliza Carthy: 'Walk Away' , 'Adieu, Adieu'

I'm sitting in my flat on my own, having not managed to get to work yet, still adjusting to not being in Portugal with lots of wonderful people. I'll doubtless post more details shortly, hopefully with the first batch of photos.

I'd go for a selection of bulbs with different flowering dates, so that you can pretty much fit and forget, then enjoy colour almost all year round.

There's always plane trees, of course.

I'm glad to see that someone else listens to Eliza Carthy; my favourite of hers is the Whirly Whorl :)

I don't have the Whirly Whorl. A bit of research shows that it's probably time to get hold of Eliza Carthy and the Kings of Calicutt.

I personally think that it's the best thing she's done. If you come tomorrow and bring headphones then I could bring my mp3 player and you could listen to it :)

My apologies - in the end, I haven't made it to the meeting. I'd certainly be interested in hearing this on another occasion, though.

Ok I'm curious now. Who is Eliza Carthy?

Eliza is an English folk princess, as her parentage reveals. She's recorded several albums and while I don't like everything she's done, most of what she does is very listenable.

Welcome back! I found it hard to adjust to the English weather again, after a month in Italy. So cold and grey...

I hope you had a lovely time - Portugal's a place I haven't considered visiting, but I'd be interested to know what it's like.

I confess that I'd find it hard to adapt to all that sun and heat. A few days - including the wedding day itself - were bright enough for me to regret not bringing my sunglasses.

Portugal was stimulating, though - working out how to use different modes of public transport was one thing, but another was appreciating that it's a hybrid culture made up of a different but overlapping mix of elements to the UK. The levels exposed in the archaeological exploration at Lisbon's Se were categorised as Iron Age, Roman, Visigothic, Islamic and Reconquest; another indicator was the presence of portraits of fifteenth and sixteenth-century noblemen in the Maritime Museum identifying them as viceroys of India.

"still adjusting to not being in Portugal with lots of wonderful people"

Yes, it was good to see everyone again.

I hope that my pink jacket didn't startle too many people...

I thought you looked very smart.
