Catching up with the world

November 5th, 2006 (02:14 am)

I'm up late again, as is occasional. I've been doing some catching up with some recent pasts. After listening to Auld Mortality the other week, I got hold of Spare Parts, another Big Finish Doctor Who story, and have listened to half of it. I bought several of the early Big Finishes but drifted away after about a year, because I thought the quality of the scripts and performances weren't as good as they could have been, and seemed either to pander to low perceptions of fan expectations (such as 'The Sirens of Time') or contained historical situations which were hopelessly muddled ('Phantasmagoria') or 'explored' ideas about history which I found both simplistic and at odds with the 1960s 'historicals' the productions were trying to emulate ('The Marian Conspiracy'). Having grown up in the days when Doctor Who was free to air, I didn't like the fact that an industry had grown up which demanded that fans spend more and more money on it to feel they were keeping up. Last year I bought 'Zagreus' and 'The Twilight Kingdom'; the former had some good ideas, some convoluted ones, and some sickly sweet fan-pleasing conceits; the latter I didn't finish.

However, it's clear I've been missing the best of the range by shunning them.

(More when I've been to bed, slept and woken up - but this post will include mention of Roobarb's DVD Forum, fiction-led Doctor Who fandom, old fanzines, DSoc, Yuletide, my not having finished anything fictional in years, whether I should be measuring myself against a catchment group who mainly seem to be students of one sort or another, my lack of productivity generally, etc. And The Complete Peerage.)
