Many years ago (to pitying looks from some of my colleagues) I went to lectures by Kristin Thompson on contemporary British television, when she was visiting professor of contemporary broadcast media at Oxford. She's now published what looks like a worthwhile study of the Lord of the Rings films, and Henry Jenkins interviews her on his blog, starting here.

When I first heard about this I thought /yawn. But after following the link and reading the interview etc. it actually doessound quite interesting and something I should try and read. love it or hate it, the LOTR films have been a very major event in cinema and Tolkien fandom.

I don't know whether I'll get round to the book, but the author tenaciously hung on to get access to the production, and she seems to believe that it worked.
