On Clintonophobia and worse

February 11th, 2008 (05:03 pm)

In the middle of marking two essays on different aspects of the American Revolution at the moment, so no extended comment - but here's a blog from Stanley Fish at The New York Times on the negative attitudes towards Hillary Clinton being expressed in the media and the blogosphere.

interesting link. woman in public eye target of mysogyny? whodathunkit. And I'm not uncritical of her either, but I'd vote for her experience over 'Obambi' any day. I think his fans are very naive, and self-deluding.

Yeah... there's a hollowness about a lot of what Obama says, but Hillary Clinton has made a lot of mistakes in her campaign which have played into a section of the American public's weariness of a politics of lobbyists and public relations. Yet I can't take Obama seriously as a grass roots candidate, particularly with so many influential party figures behind him; and Hillary Clinton's policies and experience seem to me to have greater potential to do more good. Ironically, she's suffering in part because his marketing is better...

I have criticisms of Clinton, but they are ones I could generally direct at a lot of politicians, while those who hate her seem very gender specific.
The other chap generates the warm fuzzies, but he's gonna need more than that, & I can see disillusionment ultimately setting in by his hardcore supporters.
What worries me is that a relatively small american voting block will affect what happens in the rest of the world for years. again.

I think the American polity is such that only candidates with the support of influential backers (political and financial) have a chance of success.

Exactly. The informal caucus I went to last week divided strongly for Obama, but the small Clinton camp included people arguing that running against the system rhetorically isn't practical.
