"Mr Bridges Father in Law to the D:[uke] of Shrewsbury Dyd sudenly by cutting the nail of his Toe Gangrened, & the next day his Leg was cut off & he dyed the Morning after."

While there are horror stories about MRSA death from unexpectedly infected wounds must have been far more common three hundred years ago.

Sounds like the sort of period detail that might be of use to "Master and Commander", "Sharpe" and "Horatio Hornblower" fanfic writers.

Even though it sounds like it wandered out of the pages of one of the tomes in the "Horrible Histories" series...
