I don't know how I missed this last week:

Puffin Post to fly with The Book People, from The Bookseller

Puffineers rejoice! from The Guardian Books Blog

I wasn't a Puffin Club member very long, for two to three years, but I regretted the club's passing under pressure from Penguin Books' sales team, who reportedly always hated it as it wouldn't directly sell books. This version of Puffin Post might have pleased them more, as including books on subscription is an old book club sales device.

I was a member for 4 years I think and loved it - always looked forward to the next issue of the magzine. It was a big help in getting me even more hooked on books and to know what to look out for - being in a rural valley; there was not a lot of cultural stuff and this helped fill the gap. A trip to the book shop was a big day out to the town (Durham) or even more rarely the city (Newcastle).

I was lucky enough to go to the Puffin Club exhibition at the Commonwealth Institute one year. I remember little about it but literary and arts overload - I think Quentin Blake was either present or we'd just missed him - and exploring the touring inflatable environment which I think is called Colourspace.

I was a member for an unknown number of years. I really can't remember anything much in detail, except that I read the magazine from cover to cover, and really enjoyed it. It's more a vague memory thing of paper texture and typeface and paper smell than anything more specific - though I do remember drawing a wizard in an attempt to win a Commodore 64.

I still have some copies somewhere, in the plastic binder which I think was provided with each year's membership.
