Farewell David!

October 29th, 2008 (10:53 pm)

Typical! I'm out of internet contact for a few hours, and this happens.

"WHO will he be next?" as the Brigadier said on the blurb of Doctor Who and the Planet of the Spiders...

My twopence: I hadn't realised DT was disliked as the Doctor. I'm surprised. I've seen the entirety of Dr Who - from the very beginning! And my favourite (previous) Doctors are: Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Tom Baker, Sylveste McCoy. I have to confess that Hartnell, even though he set the standard as it were, is not one of my favourites. Tennant is up there at the top somewhere, higher than Baker.

I saw Sean Pertwee suggested as the next Doctor - but I don't know if that would work. James Nesbitt I like very much as an actor, but he seems quite wrong for the role to me. The others look OK. We shall see!

I liked David Tennant in his first story, but throughout his first series he seemed to become more and more smug. This was partly a consequence of the decision to cast the relationship between Rose and the Doctor as a love story, and the awkwardness with which the revelation early in the season that the relationship was always on borrowed time was handled. I think that he improved once Billie Piper had left the series; there was a deliberate turning point early in his second series where he admitted in 'Gridlock' that the Doctor had been "too busy showing off" to get to know Martha.

I think Sean Pertwee's casting would suffer from being too much of a gimmick... but I expect the new production team to pull off the casting of someone unanticipated, but somehow right.
