Small glow of achievement

January 23rd, 2005 (05:44 pm)

I've finished the Doctor Who paper, now a month overdue. I still have to do some tidying to the filmography, a short autobiography, and then possible cuts after it's been read by the editor. The cuts are actually likely rather than possible, as the upper word limit was 5000 and I will be delivering a manuscript at more than twice the length. I did warn him back at the conference in July that I felt the natural length of the paper was longer than what he envisaged, and despite my expecting in the end to run over by about 2000 words, I've been proved right.

My next tasks are to finish the read-through of Cellis's Star Trek story, though she's now uploaded it to the fanfic site she uses so the original purpose of my reading it has been set aside; and then finish DSoc's magazine, work on which was sidelined first by the failure of my PC last summer, then by publication of TGW, and then by having to write this chapter, which took much more time than I had expected. I'm sure that I used to write more quickly than I do now.

Meanwhile at SocT candidates are declaring themselves for the presidency! And IT officer. And, er - does anyone want any of the other posts? It's going to be difficult deciding between any of the candidates, but I'd rather choose than quietly abstain. The presidency is between Cellis and Oin, and both of them are well-qualified for the post. Lots of people want to bring the website into the twenty-first century, and there seem to be competing schemes as to how to achieve this.

I've also got to remember to go through some notes tonight for a presentation that I'm helping with tomorrow evening. Deboss is addressing a gathering in Oxford, and I am to operate the laptop so the audience can appreciate the wonders of TGW as an illustration to his lecture. Before then, though, there will be a difficult meeting, as Tankgirl, whose thesis was on a very similar topic to mine, is giving a seminar paper tomorrow afternoon. Her published article, as I might have mentioned, didn't mention my work once; and the last time we met she tried anxiously to avoid me. I'll see how she is tomorrow - possibly triumphant, possibly conciliatory.

Turns out that I haven't finished it after all. I've printed out two copies on paper, and was ready to go to bed, when I caught sight of the author guidelines. I'd been misled by my anxiety to conform to the prescribed Harvard style, and after researching this had ended up using a different version to the one Manchester University Press use. Consequently I now need to replace all my in-text references with endnotes. I am furious with myself. I can't allow myself any more time on this paper because I have other things to be getting on with.
