She's fine; I gave the last tutorial on Saturday and I gave her a good mark for the term overall, emphasising that her last essay was better than her average.

Oh that's nice. Why do you think most American study abroad students write such awful essays at the beginning of their terms. I wrote horrible drivel at first, but by the end I had improved so much that my tutor said I improved more than any other student he'd ever had. I guess he was being serious because I've never met an English person prone to exaggeration.

I have no idea why some American study abroad students have difficulty writing; from my limited sample, some of my students have been out of practice. One student went to a 'university' (my inverted commas) which only taught through multiple choice questions and presented the universe entirely in terms of black and white; she improved a lot.
