Round-up from Twitter

January 20th, 2009 (10:15 pm)

  • 22:57 Finally returned to the flat after staying in library until just before closing, then prospecting for bread and cheap pizza in Sainsbury's. #
  • 22:57 I should probably learn to cook more things, but I plead irregular hours, though I have only myself to blame for those. #
  • 00:01 @tree_and_leaf I'm not sure whether the article has any point beyond gossip, unpleasant though the president and his cronies seem. #
  • 02:08 Giving in and ordering a book... #
  • 03:49 Too active (undisciplined) a mind to sleep - and I have arranged a phone call at 10am for my pains. #
  • 09:35 @tree_and_leaf Obama's speech will be at 5pm - all being well he will be sworn in at 4.56pm GMT, 11.56am Eastern. #
  • 09:59 @pellegrina Yes please to recipes..! #
  • 13:24 Realised that I forgot to print out my Americano voucher for use at Krispy Kreme, though Oxford Castle is a little out of my way. #
  • 14:04 @pellegrina You've heard about the anti-abortion campaign's issues with this promotion, I expect, but if not: tinyurl.com/97djgo #
  • 16:29 Sitting, back in Woodstock, watching the inauguration. Behind time, as has been the case before. #
  • 16:30 Good to see the elder Obama daughter with her camera. #
  • 16:31 Matt Frei not used to describing dresses. #
  • 16:32 GW Bush looking smugly demob-happy... #
  • 16:33 In fact, barely able to contain his joy at some points on his final walk... #
  • 16:40 BBC slightly awkward about covering the ceremonial aspects, I feel - perhaps just because they don't control the cameras. #
  • 16:43 ...and the crowd go wild... #
  • 16:44 in a respectful sort of way. #
  • 16:54 No, it's not the national anthem, though it used to be... #
  • 16:56 Good to hear it, though, because it connects the hopes people have placed in the Obama administration with the early US concept of liberty. #
  • 16:57 There's going to be an interregnum... #
  • 16:57 Joe Biden will be sworn in by noon, but not Obama. #
  • 17:04 Yo Yo Ma was in a West Wing episode once... Williams's composition (arrangement?) did its work without being outstanding... #
  • 17:05 Much tongue-tying on the podium. #
  • 17:07 It is extremely moving to see an African-American president being saluted by gunfire and being with his family at the heart of the US. #
  • 17:16 A careful but cutting speech, taking a blade to Reaganite orthodoxy and assertively remodelling the American narrative. #
  • 17:17 GW Bush looking cold and deflated - I love this outward looking internationalism as a flourish from Obama. #
  • 17:20 Applauding the multi-denominationalism and the inclusion of non-believers. #
  • 17:23 What am I talking about - pluralism of religious allegiance - Muslim, Hindu and Jew (a deliberate echo of the pastor who embarrassed McCain) #
  • 17:32 @tree_and_leaf I'd not go as far as Vogon, but it was definitely a diminuendo. #
  • 17:37 Revd Lowery's benediction is more appropriate to the moment. Amen! #
  • 18:31 @tree_and_leaf Which Rising? #
  • 19:39 @tree_and_leaf Thanks - I mustn't have been paying attention... #
  • 19:40 Back to the seventeenth century, and a new dawn for England in May 1660. #

Non-believers got mentioned too, of course.

I'd not meant to exclude non-believers when I revised the observation - I'd been treating the different faiths as 'denominations'. Maybe those memes which said I was a Unitarian Universalist were more right than they knew... ;)
