Vaticana II

May 4th, 2005 (03:02 am)

Referring back a few weeks - in the end I did find a copy of Saints and Sinners in the History Faculty Library. It's very chatty and, in the Yale coffee-table format first edition hardback, lavishly illustrated - but the editing isn't very good, with popes turning up without it being explained that (hypothetical example) Niccolo Sfondrati was Gregory XIV. Instead, my papal curiosity was assuaged by the purchase of The Oxford Dictionary of Popes. I've also acquired the second edition of The Oxford Shakespeare: The Complete Works, in reasonably-priced paperback form - I now at last have both the Bible and Shakespeare on my shelves, which seemed to be significant omissions.
