Early history of the Samoyed

April 23rd, 2009 (08:45 pm)

An article from Country Life, 106 years ago, about my favourite breed of dog. Beware prejudice towards non-western Europeans:

The Samoyed is also one of my favourite breeds. They have such lovely faces!

Yes, they do - they are very expressive dogs.

Lovely dogs, pity they bred out the non-white coats though. And Country Life has not changed as much as the dogs...

They didn't entirely breed out the non-white coats - George had a few stripes of biscuit on him!

Country Life has modernised its tone and appearance somewhat in the last twenty years, but the layout of 1903 remained almost unaltered for eighty years.

A Lovely Samoyed - but an Imposter!

We shall have to find a photograph of George to accompany postings on this favourite subject...
