Blessed be

September 11th, 2005 (10:34 am)

I was in Liverpool yesterday for the blessing of former DSoc president JB's second marriage. I hadn't seen JB in nearly four years - he was looking very well and when I arrived was (I think) debating between wearing a ruffled white shirt and a black T-shirt with spangly gothic lettering for the ceremony. The bride, LG, is a lady of excellent qualities, and was resplendent in a vivid green dress. The blessing was in a Methodist Church on the second floor of a building whose ground floor tenants are a radical bookshop, News from Nowhere. The church itself is called 'Somewhere Else', has no organ or formal arrangement, and its worship is centred on the baking of bread, which is very good indeed. The wedding cake was three tiers of wholemeal loaf. S, J's son from his first marriage, was there; he's now nine, wore a suit, and was on door duty. The minister proposed a toast to S at the end for his thoroughness.

I've been invited by J and L to lunch next Sunday - which means another long drive, this time from my parents', down to Birkenhead. I've said yes, though, as it would be very good to catch up.

So, I'm now in the north-east again for a week. More later!
