Torchwood 4: Mid-Atlantic

June 7th, 2010 (06:19 pm)

Torchwood has finally been recommissioned: and it's a co-production...

...but where will it be shot? Production HQ seems to be in Los Angeles with Russell, Julie and Jane, but that's not clear - perhaps there will be a mixture of Welsh and US locations. Canada, perhaps... I've not heard of the Starz network, so don't know their track record. Hmmm.

The announcement was made on a Torchwood website still geared up to promoting Children of Earth; and I think that's the only reason.

Oh god, is this going to be another of those times when they take a really good, much-loved British series and make something tacky and naff?

Oh hang on, this is Torchwood. They did that with the first episode.

It's definitely being badged as a continuation rather than a remake... and I am more confident in a series run by RTD than one managed by Chris Chibnall.

Starz are the network behind 'Spartacus: Blood And Sand' (straight to Bravo), which Charlie Brooker reviewed as "...possibly the lustiest, goriest, most wilfully red-blooded drama series the law and human decency will allow."

So I'm upbeat about this news.

I'd looked them up since posting, and see that among their expanding slate of original drama commissions is Camelot created and showrun by Chris Chibnall, which is being made in Ireland. I suspect it bears some relation to his ideas for Merlin, which IIRC he initiated but from which he was expelled at an early stage, to the extent that his name does not appear on the credits as a co-creator, giving him freedom of movement.
