Royal wedding: highlights and shadows

April 29th, 2011 (04:12 pm)

BBC coverage: Huw Edwards managing fairly well with the commentary, and not misidentifying any areas of London. Praising the contribution of Jake Humphrey from the Lancaster bomber even though Humphrey's signal kept breaking up. Fearne Cotton's early afternoon handover from Buckingham Palace after a rush of vox pops: "Huw! Help!"

The ceremonial keeping to time.

Everyone in the service knowing their lines.

The celebration of a collective spirit of goodwill.

No-one noticing that royal ceremonial re-enacts or seeks to recapture and co-opt the spirit of VE Day.

Both the confused efforts of protestors last night, and the pre-emptive arrests which removed them from the streets.

BBC coverage: Chris Hollins's patronising attitude to the Hyde Park revellers, and the disappearance of sound from some early parts of the broadcast on BBC One HD.

The parade of 'experts' who padded out the commentating by rephrasing Huw Edwards's questions as answers.

The obsession with the wedding dress as fashion statement.

The Guardian's online anguishing over whether it was all right to enjoy oneself today.

damn not given

I noticed without even watching! I grumbled something like "when will they stop milking the Battle of Britain to whip up patriotic fervour".

It would have been nicer if the Guardian had spent its anguish on the media othering of those who weren't partying, instead of participating in it.

I should bloody well hope they knew their lines!

The Guardian has a tendency towards metropolitan condescension and introversion on matters of identity, without defining the new consensus to which it is appealing.

I liked the Independent front page:
a lot of pictures relating to the (then) imminent events and a note "if you are not intersted in the Roayl Wedding, turn to page 6"

Sunday morning - I'm booked in at a pub hotel near the main event, and will be around for much of Monday - need to check in with other friends who have asked about Edinburgh too.

That's a pity; the other friends are relaxed about when I turn up, though, so I should be able to arrange times quite late.
