Time Shunt

December 1st, 2005 (12:31 am)

I have two 2005 calendars in my flat. One, in my study, showing images of New York City, has kept track of the months, as I have diligently turned each page as a new month has arrived. The other, in my bedroom, is a Tolkien calendar, which I had allowed to get stuck on August. This is no longer the case, and my flat is now on the way to being united in the same time zone, though there are still corners which are probably waiting to be brought into December 2005 from even earlier. I found that some of the newspapers I put in the recycling box on Tuesday had made their way to November from June, a clear sign of temporal chaos. Other signs of the time vortex stabilising are, however, evident, as some items of junk mail from this week have gone straight in the bin and will not be allowed to pile up reproachfully.

LOL I know what you mean. I have little corners of my room where jobs I meant to get around to in the summer are still sitting there. Not to mention unopened mail of great antiquity.

Telling myself I will integrate the time zones of my room sounds much more fun that telling myself I will catch up with the chores. :)

I do think it's like reintegrating the time period in which one's life is spent, though - it's as if I've been too concerned about getting on to the future, or relating to some remote past, than dealing with what is right in front of me.

I tidied up my backlog of paperwork a few weeks ago. Just the usual rubbish, you know; mortgage statement, car insurance documents, 18 months of bank statements... I only did it then because I couldn't renew my car tax until I'd found all the required bits and pieces. It took a whole weekend. I then threw away the box I was using as my "pending file", to force myself to file on a regular basis. But now I look over to the cupboard where there is a six-inch pile of papers accumulating. Periodically they overbalance and fall down between the cupboard and the wall, and at some point I shall have to move the furniture to retrieve them.

I started the proper reorganisation in September 2004 - and then stopped when the piles of paper under the old storage heaters (now replaced) became a fire hazard. One day, I shall come back...
