A thought for LJers

January 22nd, 2006 (08:37 pm)

"Mental reflection is so much more interesting than TV it's a shame more people don't switch over to it. They probably think what they hear is unimportant but it never is." -- Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

In fact, I'm going to read for twenty minutes, then watch the first part of The Virgin Queen on television - I think I might be missing David Tennant as Rousseau in The Romantics right now.

EDIT: As it happens The Romantics was yesterday - and The Virgin Queen isn't holding my attention...

I think that TVQ was doomed from the start. The BBC did a classic production (Elizabeth R) with Glenda Jackson, there has also been the excellent movie Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett). Not to mention the David Starkey series that BBC ran as a docu-drama not that many years ago. I'd rather they had taken the budget and picked another period and personage to base a drama on.

Our project secretary at TGW liked TVQ but thought that Channel 4's effort last year with Helen Mirren was better; I didn't see that. We agreed that Anne-Marie Duff's performance was good even if I thought the dialogue clunky, and the accession scene botched (the meeting with Gardiner before the arrival of the councillors on horseback was, I think, author Paula Milne's invention, though I can see why it was introduced.)

Doctor Who in May

Not my special interest, but one of many visitors here - who may be interested in advance news of a new written Who story to be published in May as part of Adult Literacy Week (it won't be in Basic English or anything like that, just priced very very keenly to attract customers who wouldn't normally buy a book. Many other authors/subjects involved).

Re: Doctor Who in May

This would be 'I am a Dalek', by Gareth Roberts, methinks. I know little about the project other that the books will probably be shorter than usual and are tagged with the 'Quick Reads' logo.
