Could it all be true? Doctor Who episode recovery news...

October 6th, 2013 (08:41 pm)

First a silly story about all the missing episodes having been found in Ethiopia, from the Sunday People.

Then Radio Times claiming two previously lost episodes would be released for sale online by BBC Worldwide on Wednesday.

Now the Daily Mirror says there will be a BBC Worldwide press conference on Tuesday to reveal if not everything, then most of the story...

DW Online released a tweet about it as well, though they said that 100 was far too high a number.

Naturally I won't have the money for things by Wednesday-- nor do I have iTunes-- so I'll be waiting and cursing the US govt shutdown and my department for constantly delaying paying me.

It looks like two to begin with, anyway...

Yeah. Released in dribs & drabs to maximise the profits they can make. :P

They've always been a cautious bunch.

I'm getting very very tired of cautious. :P

Or possibly because restoring what may be a poor quality copy that's sat in a box for four and a half decades may involve a fair bit of work.

That's very true. Deterioration in the quality of prints has been marked over the years and it's only going to become more of a factor.

Considering Underwater Menace 2 has STILL not been released, a surprise rush release this week seems very unlikely to me, although a press conference might be possible. I'd be glad to eat my words, of course. (I'd also be glad if Underwater Menace 2 was available restored on DVD...)

Underwater Menace 2 has been overtaken by its leak onto YouTube, but a restored version is almost certain to appear in the New Year, I'd have thought.

I'm sure it will be released in the new year (I estimate around February or March, given the delay on The Moonbase). My point is, if it is taking over two years to release that episode, I don't see how they are going to release other episodes within weeks. Not to mention how it was passed by the BBFC without news leaking. Even the rush release of The Crusade: The Lion on VHS years ago took longer.

They regard the decision of two years ago not to release the two episodes as downloads as a mistake, but have no plans to reverse this where Underwater Menace is concerned; or so someone has theorised.

That's plausible, but I'll still wait and see before getting my hopes up.
